How I got placed in M&A (last choice)
I put M&A as my last choice yet still got placed there

I wanted to do REIB, as real estate is what I am most interested in
Frankly, I had a poor experience working in deal advisory prior, wasn’t interested in investment banking anymore, and worried I was going to be slammed with 100+ hr weeks
Looking back I am glad that I did M&A as opposed to REIB
I worked on 3 different real estate M&A deals
Provided more hands on modeling and technical skills
CIBC thought I was best fit for M&A and working in their top group despite me not being interested at first
